Pulmonary rehabilitation is a comprehensive intervention based on patient assessment, with a treatment protocol tailored to improve the physical and psychological condition of people with chronic respiratory disease.
People with obstructive airway disease, those at risk of COPD, and patients with chest wall defects or pulmonary vascular conditions all tend to benefit. Our goals are to reduce breathlessness, increase exercise tolerance, reduce the severity of symptoms, improve psychological status, restore activities of daily living and reduce hospitalisation.
Protocols include energy conservation, strength and flexibility work, cardiopulmonary endurance training including respiratory muscle training, and prescription of suitable forms of activity.
